Stage 7 of the Tour de France 2024 is a 25.3km individual time trial from Nuits-Saint-Georges Gevrey-Chambertin.

The first part of the parcours is on roads through forests, then the second half of the stage will showcase the vineyards in this part of Burgundy on the Route des Grands Crus.

The road rises between Messanges (296m) and Curley (454m). It then descends again towards the finish.

The favourites for the yellow jersey can all time trial well, with Remco Evenepoel perhaps best of all, but could an ITT specialist beat them today?

Nuits-Saint-Georges

Nuits-Saint-Georges is one of the prestige Burgundy wines. It is usually red wine made from Pinot Noir grapes.

The nose features rose and liquorice. Young wines have aromas of cherry, strawberry and blackcurrant, and mature wines smell of leather, truffles and prunes.

A lot of Burgundy's culinary specialities involve dishes cooked in wine. That's true of boeuf bourgignon, coq au vin, and fondue bourguignonne. Escargots de Bourgogne are another local speciality.

Even the desserts are wine-based, with Belle Dijonnaise being pear poached in wine.

Stage 7 Tour de France 2024: Route Notes

The stage starts in Nuits-Saint-Georges.

Nuits-Saint-Georges

Nuits-Saint-Georges is a famous wine-making town in the arrondissement of Beaune, and the Côte d'Or département of Burgundy.

From the 900s onwards, there was mention of two small settlements, Nuits-Amont and Nuits-Aval. A church was built in the 1200s. In the 1300s, town walls were put up around both settlements.

A nearby vineyard was known as Saint-Georges, because relics of Saint George had been brought back here in the Medieval period (allegedly). Note that if you assembled all the claimed relics of many saints, you would often be able to duplicate him or her.

It was only in 1892, though, that the town became known formally as Nuits-Saint-Georges.

The bell tower was built from 1619-29, and is covered in vines.

The wine-producing area around the town is known as Côte de Nuits.

Blackcurrants are grown in Burgundy and used to make crème de cassis. Nuits-Saint-Georges has a museum in the largest crème de cassis factory, called le Cassisium.

'Le Cassisium invites you to experience a full immersion in the world of blackcurrant'. Ok, but is it compulsory? It's only that my T-shirt's white.

Visits end with a tasting.

Other than wine and crème de cassis, the area is known for its marble, which is pink and beige in colour.

Stage 7 starts with a little tour of Nuits-Saint-Georges.

The start line is on the Route de Dijon, near the Caveau Moillard.

The riders set off along Rue Camille Rodier past the Musée de Nuits-Saint-Georges, which specialises in archaelogy. Among the exhibits are cyclists who took weight-loss too far (possibly).

Then the parcours is along Rue Thurot.

There's a right turn onto Quai Fleuri, which runs alongside the Meuzin river.

Next on the route are Place Marie Maignot and Rue François Mignotte. The riders head out of town on the Rue Caumont Bréon, passing the Saint-Symphorien church.

Villars-Fontaine to Curley and Chambolle-Musigny

The course follows the Meuzin upstream to Villars-Fontaine, where a statue commemorates a battle in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.

The riders then pass close to Messanges and continue by the river to L'Etang-Vergy.

The nearby Saint-Vivant de Vergy Abbey was founded in 890, and it became a Cluniac monastery in the 1000s.

In the 1100s, the abbey was given a bequest by Duchess of Burgundy Alice de Vergy of her best vineyards. The abbey produced prestigious wines for nearly 650 years.

It was dismantled during the French Revolution (starting in 1789), but restoration began in 1999. During the works, a bottle of wine dating from 1770 was discovered. It was tasted in 2011.

It's at Etang-Vergy that the road starts to rise.

Next along the route are the villages of Reulle-Vergy and Curley. The top of the rise is just after Curley, at around 464m.

There's then a descent to Chambolle-Musigny.

Chambolle-Musigny is well-known for producing quality wine. This is what Berry Bros. & Rudd say about Chambolle-Musigny wine.

'The wines are not the deepest-coloured of the Burgundies, nor the most structured, but they deliver a sensuous fruit and a laciness of texture which are highly satisfying'.
Berry Bros. & Rudd

The Saint-Vincent wine-tasting festival was launched in Chambolle-Musigny in 1938, and it's still going. It is hosted by a different village each year, and is generally on the last weekend in January.

There's a parade to honour patron saint of wine growers Saint Vincent and free wine tasting.

At Chambolle-Musigny, the parcours joins the Route des Grands Crus.

The Route des Grands Crus crosses the most prestigious part of the Burgundy vineyards that include 37 villages in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune area between Santenay in the south and Dijon in the north.

See a map of the Route des Grands Crus.

The next village after Chambolle-Musigny is Morey-Saint-Denis.

Morey-Saint-Denis

96% of Morey-Saint-Denis wines are red, made with Pinot Noir grapes, and 4% are white, made with Chardonnay.

Morey-Saint-Denis reds have a long ageing potential (ten to twenty years, depending on the vintage).

They are intense in colour and powerful in aroma and taste; you may detect notes of blackcurrant, cherry, musk and liquorice.

The Stage 7 finish town is Gevrey-Chambertin.

It's a touristy wine-making place on the Route des Grands Crus and in the Côte de Nuits wine area. Chambertin is a famous Burgundy wine.

These vineyards are on the east-facing slopes of the Côte d'Or escarpment, on the western edge of the Saône valley. The grape variety is Pinot Noir.

It was in the 1st century BC, in the Gallo-Roman period, that the first vines were planted here - but on the flat plain rather than in terraces on slopes. The wines would have tasted different, because the Gallo-Romans added spices as preservatives.

Stage 7 Tour de France 2024: the Favourites

Remco Evenepoel
Remco Evenepoel, by Granada, CC BY-SA 4.0

Stage 7 is one for time triallists, not like some ITTs on the Tour de France which are weighted towards climbers.

Stefan Küng and Stefan Bissegger are both taking part in the Tour and will be targeting this stage. Yves Lampaert can time trial well, as can Luke 'turbo durbo' Durbridge.

Geraint Thomas can do a very good ITT performance on his day.

Wout van Aert can never be ruled out, and Mathieu van der Poel is capable of riding well against the clock.

The GC contenders are also good at ITTs, including Primoz Roglic, Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar.

Remco Evenepoel will be wearing his World Champion's jersey, and could be fastest of all. Here's how he won the right to wear the rainbow bands, in Scotland in 2023.

This is Remco winning the ITT at the Dauphiné 2024.
