Stage 4, Tour de Yorkshire 2019: the route
Stage 4, Tour de Yorkshire 2019: the start in Halifax
Stage 4 of the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire starts outside the Piece Hall in Halifax. The riders do a loop along Square Road, Broad Street, Commercial Street, Portland Place, Skircoat Road, Free School Lane, and Aachen Way. They then head out of town on the A629 Ovenden Road.
Stage 4, Tour de Yorkshire 2019: Halifax to Middleham
The race route forks right off the A629, onto Shay Lane. It leads to Holmfield, Holdsworth, and Bradshaw. Then the course picks up the A644 Brighouse & Denholme Road to Denholme Clough.
After a short stretch of the A629, the riders take the B6141 Long Causeway to Bradshaw Head, then Black Moor Road to Haworth. Here, they do the now traditional climb of Main Street.
They leave Haworth on Mytholmes Lane, and cross the river Worth. Then Providence Lane takes them on towards Lane End, Oakworth. Holme House Lane leads towards Laycock, then Green Sykes Road constitutes the first categorised climb on Stage 4, the Côte de Goose Eye.
Next, it's full steam ahead for Sutton-in-Craven, and across Home Beck to Crosshills. The A629, alongside the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, leads from Crosshills to Skipton.
After going up Skipton High Street, the riders climb past the castle on The Bailey, then fork left on Skipton Road to Embsay (on the route of the Sustrans Skipton to Bolton Abbey ride).
Barden Road leads to Eastby, and on up to Barden Moor. This is the second climb of the day, the Côte de Barden Moor. The height at the top is around 311m.
Then it's downhill to the B6160 at Barden.
Next Stage 4 heads north on the B6160 to Burnsall, Threshfield, and Kilnsey. Well into the Yorkshire Dales now, the first intermediate sprint is at Kilnsey.
The riders continue to Kettlewell.
There, they take the road up to Park Rash. It's a steep ascent, that reaches 503m. This is the third categorised climb on Stage 4.
The road descends into Coverdale, passing through Horsehouse and Gammersgill, then Carlton. The riders continue to Coverham and Middleham.
Stage 4, Tour de Yorkshire 2019: Middleham to Leeds
Now, the competitors are on a route familiar from the 2014 Tour de France. This road will also feature in the elite men's road race at the 2019 UCI road World Championships. It's the A6108 from Middleham to East Witton, Jervaulx Abbey, and Masham.
Next the riders take Thorpe Road south out of Masham, cross the river Burn, then pass Nutwith Common. They head up past Hack Fall Woods to Grewelthorpe.
They then head for Main Street, Kirkby Malzeard.
Next, they cross the river Laver at Laverton. After Laverton, they head south on one of my favourite cycling roads, across Dallow Moor. There's a short, steep descent to Skell Beck, and back up the other side.
They continue until they meet Blazefield Bank, where they turn right to Glasshouses. Joining the B6165 at Glasshouses, they head to Pateley Bridge.
After going down Pateley High Street, the peloton must climb Greenhow Hill, the fourth official climb.
The descent off Greenhow Hill is on Duck Street/Redlish Road, and leads to Blubberhouses, where the riders cross the A59. The other side of the A59 is Church Hill, leading to Rues Lane. It crosses Askwith Moor, and descends to Otley.
Here the riders take the bridge over the Wharfe, and head south on Gay Lane to East Chevin Road. This is the Côte de Otley Chevin, the fifth and final categorised climb of the stage.
Descending off the Chevin, the race joins Cookridge Lane, then forks left in Cookridge onto Tinshill Road. It passes close to Horsforth station, then takes Tinshill Lane, where the second intermediate sprint will contested.
Now on Otley Old Road, the riders then fork right on Spen Lane. They cross the Ring Road, and continue to Kirkstall Abbey, where they join Abbey Road (not that one).
At Kirkstall, they cross the river Aire, and pick up Wyther Lane/Armley Ridge Road/Cockshott Lane. Then, it's left on the A647 Stanningley Road to Armley; left on Ledgard Way/Canal Road to cross the railway, the canal, and the Aire; and right on Burley Road/Park Lane to The Headrow.
The finish line is in front of Leeds Town Hall on The Headrow, and whoever wins the Tour de Yorkshire 2019 after this tough stage will thoroughly deserve it.
